This chicken is the first breed developed in Canada. Chantecleres are bred to withstand cold temperatures and continue to lay in winter. Like many cold-hardy birds, these have small combs and wattles to prevent frostbite. This is a dual-purpose breed. Average mature weight: Roosters 8 1/2 lbs., hens 6 1/2 lbs.
