Black Australorps are one of the most popular producers of large brown eggs and are known for their persistence in laying - even in hot weather. When mature, these birds have glossy, all-black feathers that show a gorgeous green sheen, particularly in the sunlight. From the time these chicks hatch until they are fully grown, their feathers have white tips. Average mature weight: roosters 5 1/2 lbs., hens 5 lbs.

GREAT LAYERS, January 18, 2009 Reviewer: Nick from OH We purchased Black Australorps last year and they have always been great layers, even through the summer heat and the sub-zero temps. We have collected an average of four eggs a day from 6 Black Australorps!

2 out of 2 people found the following review helpful. Black IS Beautiful, January 11, 2008 Reviewer: Henrietta from HI Good hens, fairly fast developing & early to lay, one or two have tried to set but if you remove the eggs daily they will give up. They have a nice calm temperament, to me this is important because excitable and hysterical hens do not lay and with the price of chicken feed who needs non layers?
The Australorps have a pretty, light brown egg, very flavorful and a good size.
