Black Australorps are one of the most popular producers of large brown eggs and are known for their persistence in laying - even in hot weather. When mature, these birds have glossy, all-black feathers that show a gorgeous green sheen, particularly in the sunlight. From the time these chicks hatch until they are fully grown, their feathers have white tips. Average mature weight: roosters 5 1/2 lbs., hens 5 lbs.

Best roosters I've ever had, August 16, 2009 Reviewer: Merry from WA No matter what my flock consists of, I always make sure the rooster is an Australorp. I've had them for years and have yet to meet a mean one - very important since my chickens are free-range and I have small children. My only complaint about this breed is that they're so docile that the hens fall prey to predators easier than some of the spookier breeds. Good fencing or a watchful farm dog are good protection... I've also had luck with an Australorp rooster covering a more cautious breed of hens, like Rhodies or Ameraucanas. But then you miss out on the friendly, productive Aussie hens!

Black Australorp hens and roosters, November 21, 2008 Reviewer: Edward from KY These chickens have grown well and are laying at approx 4 1/2 mos old. It is November and cold here in KY. Nice brown eggs and they like the rollout nest boxes we built real well.
