Buff Orpingtons are a popular dual-purpose variety, and are sometimes called "Big Buffs." Because they are loosely feathered they appear to be heavier than their true weights. Their golden buff feathers are broad and smooth fitting on this deep-bodied breed. They have quiet dispositions, make excellent mothers, and are of the most broody of all standard breeds. Their white skin is a cosmetic disadvantage for use as meat birds. Also known as Big Buffs. Average mature weights: roosters 8 1/2 lbs., hens 7lbs.

Fantastic Chicks, July 2, 2008 Reviewer: Robyn from MO I picked up my Buff Orpingtons this morning, all 112 of them plus extras. There were no DOA's. All started drinking and eating right away. It's been 5 hours since I put them in the brooder and they are running around flapping their wings and are very lively. So far very healthy active chicks.
