These are known as the first breed of chickens established in the Americas. Poultry lovers have been working in recent years to increase numbers of this breed, which had nearly gone extinct. These black and white barred birds are great foragers, have rosecombs, and lay brown eggs. Average mature weight: roosters 7 lbs.; hens 5 lbs.

Love our doms!, May 30, 2008 Reviewer: Jessica from MI We have small, mostly forested (and coyote, bear, owl, hawk, eagle and other predator populated) acreage so we didn't want to start off with the usual 25 chicks. I was thrilled that I discovered Meyer Hatchery who could provide me with a small order--4 chicks. After two weeks "the girls" are plump and feathery, very active, alert and healthy. My husband, who at first was tolerant, if not supportive, of my idea to get hens now takes them one by one outside daily to peck around in the grass. We're now locally known as the "chicken wranglers." I can hardly pull my daughter away from the brooder, she's fascinated with them. Two of them like to perch on our arms like parrots.
Thank you Meyer Hatchery for getting us started with our egg-laying flock.

Friendly, spunky just a wonderful breed, July 26, 2006 Reviewer: Shana from NY If you're looking for a hardy, friendly, great foraging chicken with a fun spunky yet loving attitude then Dominique's are the breed for you. I've gotten so much pleasure out of raising Dominiques. Out of all the chicks I've raised, Dominiques are my favorites. They're usually the most vigorous chicks in the brooder. They mature quite quickly and given the chance they will forage most of their food when old enough. Since owning Dominiques I can see why they were once the most popular chicken. They could forage and survive with the pioneers. Awesome chickens!
