The Spalding Peafowl, Pavo cristasus, is a strikingly beautiful cross between the India Blue and the Java Green peafowl. They more closely resemble the Blue in coloration but have a body structure more in line with the Java Green. Also like the India Blue, the Spalding peafowl tend to be calmer than the Java in temperament. The Spalding are somewhat more tolerant of the cold than the Java, but are not quite as cold-hardy as an India Blue, so a heated, insulated shelter will be necessary in the winter for northern US climates.

Since the Spalding is a hybrid of the India Blue and Java Green, the coloration can vary. Peacocks tend to show coloring more closely resembling the Blue and have a shorter crest. The Spalding peahens tend to follow the Java Green color pattern, having a more solid bluish-green color on the chest and neck and a small orange patch on the cheek. It is worth noting that Spalding peafowl will not breed true to produce offspring that look like their parents.

Peafowl kept in captivity should be fed a higher protein gamebird feed. You may also supplement their diet with seeds, greens, insects and grubs. They may also enjoy small reptiles and amphibians if given the chance.

Peafowl begin breeding at 3 years of age, during the months of April thru June. A single male can service multiple females for breeding purposes. Peafowl nest on the ground, and will lay 4 to 6 eggs per clutch, which hatch in 36 to 38 days.
