As the name suggests, this breed was developed in Rhode Island and is even the state's official bird. It has many profitable characteristics such as they are calm birds and are among the best layers for a heavy breed. They lay around 200-250 eggs annually, but rarely brood and lay a large brown egg. The hens grow to 6 lbs. and the roosters 71/2 lbs. The roosters can be aggressive and are a shiny dark red with greenish-black tail feathers.
