Welsh Harlequin Ducks

The unusual look of these ducks originates from a flock of miscolored Khaki Campbells. The Welsh farmers who first discovered the mutation began breeding for the unique color around the middle of the 20th century. A couple of decades later, the first hatching eggs, followed by adult breeders were sent to the United States. Just like their predecessors, these ducks are great foragers and prolific layers.

Welsh Harlequin ducks are good layers of medium size white eggs, laying around 100-150 eggs per year. Female ducks weigh around 4 1/2 pounds and drakes around 5 1/2 pounds at maturity. Welsh Harlequin’s mature in about 16-28 weeks and are known for being broody. Like most domestic ducks, the Welsh are capable of flying very short distances, if at all.
