The Welsummer breed is an extremely rare breed of bantam chicken developed in Holland in the early 20th century. Their ancestry is traced back to a cross between Barnevelders and other native breeds. They are well known as the top free range foragers of all the layers. The bantam Welsummer plumage is very similar in appearance to the black and brownish-red feathering of the standard Welsummer. A noticeable difference is that the bantam carries its tail at a more upright angle. Welsummer Bantams will lay small mahogany eggs.
Average weight: roosters 34 oz, hens 30 oz. Bantams are straight run only.
